Thanks for the reply. I'm using Outlook 2003.

Do you mean Internet explorer or windows explorer? Widows explorer is
set to show known file types, and I can't find anything like this in IE
I can only see the attached file's name if i click on the message and
see the whole message in the right hand window (filename then appears
in right hand window at top of message)
