The first thing you should do is disable whatever McAfee if doing to
integrate it with your email, particularly the outgoing mail. It doesn't
make you any less safe, because the files on your PC have already been
scanned by your AV, so checking your outbound mail again is a waste of time
and can lead to problems if the interaction with Outlook and the AV program
take too long.
Second, you should check for mail only every 10 to 15 minutes. Reducing the
send/receive interval too far can cause outlook to begin it next
send/receive cycle before the previous one is complete, causing messages to
stay in your Outbox and sometimes still be sent over and over again to your
recipients.
Third, you should lengthen your server timeout period. A short period can
cause a disconnect between Outlook and your server before the message
transmission is complete, also causing mail to get stuck in your Outbox.
