Thanks, Jocelyn!
Some extra information: Outlook express was already my default newsreader,
so I was able to follow your instructions exactly. I did find, though, that
by running Outlook Express first, then starting Outlook 2003, the "News"
function magically reappeared in the Go category.
So I dragged it over to the standard toolbar, and let go before the "Go"
submenu expanded. The "News" shortcut became part of the standard toolbar.
No big deal, I thought, until I tried to use it, and all it does is open the
"1033" subdirectory of my shared files! I was able to repeat this several
times by removing and reattaching the News shortcut to the standard toolbar,
so go figure. Anyway, apparently the "News" shortcut will ONLY work from the
GO submenu, so one must drag the "News" shortcut over to the GO submenu,
wait for it to expand, position the cursor over the desired place, and only
then, release the mouse button.
Oh, to reset the standard toolbar (to get rid of the incorrectly installed
"News" shortcut), I had to undock the toolbar so it was free floating, then
use the dropdown arrow in the far right of the header, and choose "reset".
The other "Reset" buttons available elsewhere (Tools-->customize, etc.)
don't work!
Thanks again, and maybe my info will prove helpful to those who have been
unable to fix their News problems.
All in all, unless you need some of the new functionality from 2003, Outlook
2000 is a much more stable, intuitive, and user-fixable program. I think
Microsoft took a few steps forward with 2003, but many more back (fax number
handling, handling multiple e-mail entries for a contact, etc.).
Best,
Phil Otis
