There is no folder named documents.
What is the "profile" and what directories and files are part of it? On my
original drive my ../Outlook directory contained an archive.pst and an
outlook.pst only.
I do not see what harm renaming a pst file would cause. Perhaps you could
elaborate.

As far as your Outlook profile is concerned, you overwrote its file. You
never rename Outlook data files in Windows Explorer. You never copy Outlook
files to the default location.
Start over with a new profile and follow the directions that have been
posted to connect it to a good copy of your Outlook data file.

I did not overwrite an existing pst. I renamed the one that was in the
directory I have mentioned and then copied in the original one with its
original name, outlook.pst.
Control panel applet has the filename and location correct.

It is definitely the correct pst.

The modification date is correct on the pst. It was the date last used
about
3 weeks ago. In my earlier posts, I was looking at the wrong pst files.

I do not see a send folder in outlook, I do not see a folder by the name
xxx
which is where mail it put that contains xxx in the header. Also if I
open a
new mail, it no longer contains my sig (this is a minor point, I really
just
want my mail back).

The original drive is connected via usb and I found the archive.pst
and
outlook.pst at \Documents and Settings\<user>\Local
Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook

Can I just copy these files to the C drive under the directory path

above? Will this destroy the profile? Will the email be accessible

logon as that user?

OK. Here is what I am trying to do. Because I could no longer
boot

system, I am rebuilding my xp sp3 /office 2002 system. I have an
administrator account that I only use to install sw and a user

I am running Win XP Pro SP3 with Office XP (2002). My system
crashed

When I try to import the file I get an access denied error.

When I try to change ownership of the pst file by right
clicking
properties,
I do not get a security tab. I then went into Control Panel
Folder
options
and unchecked the following:
Use simple file share...
Display simple folder...
The security tab still does not show up in the properties of
the
.pst
file.

Are my approaches incorrect? I really need to get this pst
file
back
as
it
has a 5 year history of content that I need. How should I
proceed?

Another strange thing is that the modifcation date on the pst
file
is
years
older than expected. I would have expected it to have the
last
date
that
I
opened mail. Is that an incorrect assumption?
