Re: Help moving from Win 2000/Outlook 2002 to Win XP/Outlook 2007

Looking at the list below, I do not believe he has any custom forms. I think
all custom views are going to be lost anyway due to the ribbon system, there
are no wizard rules and we keep the autoarchive turned off. Anything else I
am missing? Thanks again, i really do appreciate any feedback.

Export pst-file
It’s a general misconception that an export of your mail is a good backup.
This misconception gets even bigger if you run the export and see that the
default name of the file to export to is backup.pst. The reason that it isn’t
a backup is because you will lose data during an export even if you configure
the export to export all the folders and subfolders. The following data gets
lost during an export;

custom forms
custom views
Wizard Rules
folder properties like AutoArchive settings

Ok, so what I have done is play with this in 2 ways. Using the descibed
method below I was able to load the new .pst and the old .pst side by side
and change the default .pst, etc. The only thing I noticed is that my boss
has over 150 categories he stuffs contacts into and they all show up as
"inactive" (Not in master category list) by default. The contacts are still
marked, but you cannot add a new one to one of these categories unless the
categories is re-created and given a color, etc.

If I export the old .pst and then import it into OL 2007, all of the contact
categories are automatically assigned colors and are "active", which saves a
lot of time. I can see no other data being lost, so I am curious what I may
be missing or why this approach is so frowned upon. It may be that I just am
not seeing what is missing yet, so beore I give my boss his computer to go
live, could anyone give some tips as to what settings or info to check and
see if it is missing via the import method?? Thanks!!!!!

Ensure OL is closed on the old PC before copying to your flash drive

On new PC its best to copy from your flash drive to eg a My Documents
folder, then rename the data files to something appropriate

Start OL on the new PC and configure the accounts, & test them; Then within
OL File>Open>Data File......browse to the location of your old data files &
open them.
You now have two choices;
Leave the old data files open & do nothing (the default, new data file, will
be that used for send/receive, but you can still view old data) or
Copy data from the old data files to the new data file

If you are leaving the old data file open in OL you can select its
properties and rename the display name
The links I gave also give info on moving some settings, eg the autocomplete
file

Thank you. Not having had the opportunity to try this yet, I am slightly
confused. Let me see if I have this straight. I will go to the old
computer
with Outlook 2002 on it, locate the .pst file for that installation. Use
Explorer to copy it to a flash drive (in my case), take the flash drive to
the new computer with Outlook 2007 on it. Go to file>open>Outlook Data
File
and then navigate to the file and open it. From here it is unclear what I
will see and how to "copy what I want" from that file into the new file?
Perhaps it would be obvious when I do it, but until then it is vague to
me.
Any further insight would be great! Thank you again!

Do NOT import or Export

NB OL2007 uses unicode format pst, this doesnt have the size limitation
of
earlier version so configure 2007 with a new default pst, then connect
your
'old' pst's to this (File>Open>Data File) copy data from old to new.
Your old dat files can be located in any convenient location eg My
Documents

I am having a heck of a time trying to figure out the best method to
migrate
my boss' information on his old computer (Windows 2000/Outlook 2002) to
a
new
computer (Windows XP/Outlook 2007).

Many suggestions I have found require a combination of things I cannot
achieve due to the versions and/or system requirements.

I do not want to lose any of his data and as few of his settings as
possible. I have read here that backing up his .pst file may lose some
data
as well. I know nothing is perfect, but does anyone have any
suggestions?
I
can play with the import onto his new computer and if it does not work
right
I can just erase it and start over, but I am at a loss for the best
method
in
this scenario? Any thoughts would be appreciated - thank you!!
