Well I upgraded and it was fine, but then you can uninstall first.
NB The OL upgrade may continue to use your old pst, it would be wise to
create a new unicode pst, copy the old data to that, and set it as the
default.
I have Office 2000 including Outlook. I plan on upgrading to Office 2003
including Outlook. Do I need to uninstall the old version or can I install
over the old office, thus an upgrade?

You didn't indicate what you want, so I can't predict whether you panicked because you want a new install, or if you panicked just because you saw the word "uninstall" before continuing. ... I'd recommend an upgrade unless you have a reason not to, and in that case, you don't need to uninstall. ...
