I use a tool called WinZip from http://www.winzip.com . Windows XP can read
.zip files, or the recipient may have a copy of WinZip or a similar tool
themselves.
You could also try changing the file extension from .dat to something else.
That extension may be triggering something in a mail server through which
the message passes.
