Repeating: Selecting the Private option doesn't change how the DL works. All
it does is prevent a delegate, someone with permission to view your Contacts
folder, from seeing that DL -- seeing it **as it exists in your folder**.

Your original message indicated that you already know the solution: Put the
DL in the Bcc section.

Putting the names in the BCC section accomplishes the privacy, but this
seems to be a workaround to do what the "Private" option is supposed to be
