A file is blocking my email

I had a friend send me pictures from his trip, but he sent me his digital
files from his camera. I have a 250MB email trying to download into my inbox
and it always times out even at 5 mins......and I have 34 emails behind it
that I HAVE TO GET....is there anyway to fix this???
