You might try checking the "login to incoming server before sending" box on
your "Outgoing server" tab. Intermittent login failures like those you're
describing can happen if you're supposed to use that setting but aren't -
sometimes you'll be trying to send mail right after you've downloaded mail
and it will work, other times you haven't downloaded recently so it doesn't
work.
