Adding attachments run slow in Outlook 2003

This is a strange one. When I am writing an email and want to add a file as
an attachment I click on "Insert", "File" and the Insert File window appears
with no problem, but when I click on the dropdown box to select another
directory it takes ages to progress to the next directory. This happens with
every directory I choose until I get to the one I want and then I can insert
the file fine.
It actually takes minutes between selecting directories.
It used to work fine.
No viruses detected. Task manager reports "System Idle Process" is taking up
most of the CPU time when the fault is occuring.
Can anyone help?
