HOW DO I DISABLE AUTOCORRECT?

i am typing a WORD document. every time i correct a mistake, the previous
text gets replaced with the new. i disabled AUTOCORRECT under TOOLS but
nothing changed. also when i place the cursor between two words and tap the
space bar, rather than insert a space, a letter gets replaced
