Outlook hangs due to SVCHOST.EXE

When I try to start Outlook (WinXP/Office 2002) it hangs at the splash
screen for about 3 minutes right after I select the profile I want to use.
I can correct the problem by hitting Ctrl+Alt+Del, going to Task Manager,
and stopping one of the instances of SVCHOST.EXE that appears to be taking
up 70-80% of the processing time. When I run tasklist /svc at the command
prompt, the particular instance of SVCHOST.EXE that is causing the problem
shows the following entries: EventSystem, Netman, Nla, RasMan, SENS,
TapiSrv, winmgmt.
ALL patches/critical updates have been regularly applied to this particular
machine, and I am running the latest version of VirusScan Enterprise on the
network. The machine has also been scanned with McAfee's Stinger utility
with no indication of a virus having been found.
Any help would be appreciated.
