Editing data from slide show works the same in previous versions as in 2007, so yes, I think the issue is confusion between Normal (editing) View and Slide Show View.
To edit during a Slide Show, you need to add an object action animation. I posted instrux for this recently; you can access them here:

What happens when you try to edit the data? The slide show advances to next
slide
As a matter of fact, how are you trying to access the data? Click, Ctrl
Click, Alt Click, Shift Click
This may all stem from my my confusion over how I think it should react and
the way PowerPoint is designed to respond . I have tried at least 6 different
methods of creationg the "linked data".
What I just found furthers my confusion. The "link", when clicked on in
PowerPoints design mode, opens the file in Excel and does allow editing. This
edit is then displayed in the PoewerPoint slide when the Excel edit session
is closed.
What my co-worker and I expected is that we could edit the linked data from
the slideshow screen. This does NOT happen-- Click, Ctrl Click, Alt Click,
Shift Click all either advance a slide, back up a slide, or have no effect.
IS this the behaviour I should expect or is there a way, short of a
hyperlink, that will allow me to edit the linked file from the slideshow
mode? Or am I chasing a solution that does not exist?
Thanks for your response. Clarification appreciated.
This issue was presented to me as a difference in behaviour between Office
2002 and our new Office 2007. Unfortunately I no longer have an '02 version
to test against.

What happens when you try to edit the data?
As a matter of fact, how are you trying to access the data?
