Are you trying to edit it on individual slide layouts? Can you edit it on the slide master (the big thumbnail)?

No I can't. It just brings up a little Header and Footer window like I am
starting from scratch, rather than going to the slide itself where I can edit
it. On my slides, the footer, which appears on every slide, is in three
sections. On the left section is some text (actually a copyright notice). In
the middle is the page number. On the right section is a file reference.
