Here I can either open a new file with the default pot and apply my template
or New > From my template In both cases the names of the masters are all
retained. If you email me I'll send the pot file for you to see what happens
there. The name in the status bar is the name or the master slide in use BTW.

The name of the "design" on the status bar is the name of the POT file and
in master view the name of the slide master is the name of the POT file and
in Slide Design task pane the name of the slide miniture is the name of the
POT file. The renamed master is lost.

However, if the start a new presentation from the blank template and then
apply the custom POT after then it does show the renamed master.

It therefore seems pointless to rename the first master slide in a template.
