Those fonts are fine. However, I wouldn't mind if I had to buy an

PPT 2007 does do kerning, which previous versions didn't do. It also
allows you to create outlined text and add effects to text (such as
reflections, etc.
I don't think that kerning, etc. is that important. I'm just looking
for a clean layout where the sizes of the text blocks, fonts, etc. and
their distances are easy on the eye.
You may want to consider creating your own template or having one
created for you since your requirements are pretty specific. (Like,
what exactly do you consider a "frill"?)
Everything that goes beyond black text on white background is a frill to
me. Of course, when it makes sense, I do use colored text and nice
illustrations, but I don't want to have any of that in the master.
