I appreciate your advice as well. I tried your suggestion twice and it
still doesn't appear to work. The page number is on the master but
when applied as a design using File, New, still does not show up on my
new slide show--until I go to the header/footer dialog under the view
menu.
Are there slides in your template? If so they'll become part of your
presentation when you create a new presentation based on a template. If they
already have headers/footers off, then they'll stay off until you change it.
But also try choosing File, New then in the New Presentation task pane, choose
"On my computer" under Templates rather than one of the other options.
That can make a difference.
Thanks again both of you.

Nicole,
Instead of starting a new presentation and applying the template, create a
new presentation using the template. Do File--> New, which brings up the New
Presentation task pane. Use the link "From Design template" to create your
presentation. You should then get the header and footer settings as
indicated in your template.
Meanwhile... {Nudge Steve} - Hey Steve, maybe the difference between opening
a new presentation with a template and applying a template to a new
presentation should go in the FAQ - it seems to be appearing more and more
often lately.

Trevor,
thank you for the suggestion. I followed your steps below. However,
when I start a new presentation and apply the design template, I still
have to go into the header footer box and turn on the slide number
option. It does not appear to save with the template.
Thanks for the suggestion, I'll go ahead and add another step to the
intructions to our users that they will have to turn on the slide
numbering in order for the numbers to appear.

Open your template and click on View | Master | Slide Master
Right Click on the page and select Master Layout.
Make sure you have the SlideNumber Placeholder ticked (and formatted the
way
you want)
Close Master View
Click on View | Headers and Footers, and tick the Slide Number box
Resave your template
Should now work automatically for you
Remember you'll need to do the same for your Slide Title page (also in
the
Slide Master)

We have designed a slide master and saved it as a design template that
will be used by several people to create similar looking presentations.
I have been asked to add a slide number box to the design template, so
that the slides are AUTOMATICALLY numbered--meaning it happens as part
of the design template, with no user intervention needed.
I have the slide number place holder on the slide master. However,
numbers don't show up when applying the master to a new presentation.
I must do this (as noted in an earlier thread (like 5 years ago) to get
the numbering to work:
"It's not very intuitive, but now you need to go to View/Headers and
Footers and turn the slide numbering on.
Echo "
My question is, it appears that each user will have to, for each
presentation, turn on the slide numbering in the headers and footers?
There is no way to incorporate this into the master?
Advice appreciated.
