Do you mean an animated GIF or just a graphic of type GIF? I ask because
there are differences in how Animated GIFs play in the different versions of
PPT. Check out this information from Sonia Coleman's site:

I am making a powerpoint movie, but on one slide I put in a GIF as a
background and
I put a sound file into it, so it lines up with the animation. But then,
when I go from the slide before it, the animation has already gone halfway
through. I don't want to have to make it a trigger, but can I make it so
the
animation only plays when I want it to?
PS. I made the GIF the background.
