I like Matt had the same problem. I ran the Detect and Repair option as
well
as closed the other Microsoft applications. This appeared to work on my
computer as well.
Just food for thought.

Interesting. Wonder if it's a conflict between the Office translation
pack
and something else installed more recently? Seems a little far-fetched.
So let's think about other add-ins you might have installed that run when
you open the other Office apps. Anything come to mind? For example, I
have
Adobe Acrobat, SnagIt, and Camtasia Studio all installed. These all have
hooks into various Office programs and start running when I open Word or
PPT. Actually, I don't think Camtasia Studio starts running when I start
Word, only when I start PPT. See how it can get complicated really fast?
:-)
Here's another recent thread that discusses various places to check for
add-ins. You might start there. (You want the last post in that thread.)
http://tinyurl.com/bc3u7 In your case, you may also want to check for
add-ins listed under Word and Excel and Outlook.

Hmm, I have the translation pack for Office installed, but that has
been
on
my computer for a while now (2+ years) and this problem only seems to
be
of
recent origin (last month or so). In the end, I guess it's just a
minor
annoyance to have to close other Office programs, open PPT, and then
re-open
the Office programs (that seems to keep things working fine).

This has been cropping up more and more lately, and it's probably

some sort of add-in.
Nice detective work finding that PPT works fine when the other Office
programs are closed. So maybe it's an Office-wide add-in or helper
application. Do you have any translation programs installed, by any
chance?

An add-on to "StephieW": I was/am having the same problem, and I
noticed
that
if all other Office programs are closed, then slide layout preview
displays
correctly. I tried the "detect and repair" answer from below, which
didn't
seem to do anything. Any thoughts on how to overcome this problem
without
having to close other Office programs?

Try the "Help" - "Detect and repair" menu option.
It could be that your PowerPoint program files have become
corrupted.
This option will reinstall any parts of PowerPoint that are
detected
as
being corrupt.
I wish we had this option for our politicians!

When I start a new powerpoint presentation, or even open an
existing
one,
the
slide design task pane does not show the preview options for
slide
layout
&
slide design (the color scheme does show the preview). How do
I
fix
this
so
I can choose my slides?
