Takes a lot of patience to plow through it and it offers no solution to the problem, so
I won't be offended if you want to skim or skip it. <g>

About the best I've been able to do is get it to offer a file download dialog; if the
user chooses Open rather than Save, it'll open in the browser.

But at least it does get you to the file download option, so have another look here

Basically, you use My Computer, Tools, Options, File Types tab and in the Edit FIle Type
dialog box, put a check next to "Confirm open after download"


Whenever I have someone click on a .ppt file, it opens in IE. I have tried
both the registry edit and the File Type solution but neither seem to apply
to the way that 2003 handles documents.

See the link I posted, then. There's a link to an MS page that describes how to do
that. You have to make the change on the client PC though; it's a user preference
thing, not something you can impose from the server.



If I try to print from internet explorer i don't get all the functinality i
need with the print button. I know thereare alternaties like "Ctrl+p" but
students don't care about that so they waste paper, so I need to have some
enforcements.

Your best bet might be to include instrux to rightclick and choose Save Target
As in order to download the link.

You could also zip the PPT up and offer the zip for download. Of course then
you'd have to explain how to unzip it.

Never easy, is it?
