"Security updates"? Are you sure you are updating Office/PowerPoint and
not Windows. The Office updates are called Service Packs. PowerPoint 2003
had a problem reading older files, and this problem was fixed in Service
Pack 1.
However, if you have installed the Service Packs and are still having
trouble, you might want to check out:

There were only two security updates, and this did not fix the
problem.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------- This error can be caused by some of the following
conditions:
Your hard drive or floppy drive has a corrupt section (damaged track
or sector).
A temporary operating system or network failure has occurred.
Your network is unavailable, slow, or is corrupting data packets
(failure of a router, network card, or noise on the network
transmission line).
If the network is experiencing problems, it is usually a temporary
condition and if you wait a short period of time and try again, you
can usually save the file. If the problem persists, consult your
network administrator.
In the case of a damaged disk, you must save the file to another
location (for example, a different drive).
In the case of a failure of the operating system, this can be caused
by various memory management problems, viruses, incorrect usage of a
UNC, alias, or invalid perimissions to the share where the file is
stored. A known condition with an antivirus program can cause a
similar condition. Check with the manufacturer of your antivirus
program to see if an update exists.

Open PowerPoint, go to the Help menu, and choose Check for Updates.
Chances are good that installing the latest service packs for
PowerPoint will fix your problem.

A Powerpoint presentation I created in 1999 will not open. It says
there is an error accessing it, corrupted drive, OS failure, network
corruption, etc. I was able to find 4 copies scattered over the LAN
and old computers, but all give the same message.
I find it hard to believe that all went bad at once, as there are
two creation dates. Is this a problem becuase I am using PowerPoint
2003, rather than data corruption? Is there a repair function for
corrupted presentations as there is for Access?
Thanks,
Mich
