Thank you Sandy, this has helped... but I believe my problem was that I was
not checking the 'transparency' box when saving as a PNG... doh, classic
school boy error.

Open the image
Create a new space that's the same dimensions as your original image (set
the background as transparent)
Go back to your original image and select the Magic Wand Tool
Click on the white background so it's all highlight
Go to Select > inverse (so the bullet itself is highlighted instead of the
background)
Select the Move Tool
Click on your image, then drag it to the new space
Save the new image as a png file

have indicated that it is the cleanest way to remove it in the same program I
would prefer to go with this option. I believe I need to create a png file,

Depending on the type of image we're starting with:
Insert the image into your presentation like a regular image - not a bullet.
Select the image.
In the Picture Toolbar, find your "Set Transparent Color" Tool (it looks
like a wand, or a pen).
Use this tool to click on the white area of your picture - the white
background should disappear.
Now save this image as a .png (on PC it's right-click on picture, save
picture as) then follow the steps you previously used for bullets
