You might want to check out the April 2004 edition of Learning & Leading
with Technology (http://www.iste.org/LL/). You can access it if you are
a member of ISTE, and as a tech person for a K-12 school, you should be a
member. The April 2004 issue (volume 31, number 7) has a couple of
articles about uses of laptops in schools. This won't answer your
technical PowerPoint question, but it might give you some ideas to
suggest for the teachers.
