Adobe Illustrator enhanced metafiles no longer display correctly

Hello,

I'd appreciate any help with the following problem we're having. Our
research group has a number of presentations with images made in Adobe
Illustrator. These were inserted by copying from Illustrator and then
selecting Paste Special -> Picture (Enhanced Metafile). This procedure
had worked as long as I can remember. However, fairly recently we
noticed that some of our presentations were no longer displaying these
images correctly when reopened. A partial image with an outlining box
with a red X displays instead. Ungrouping the image doesn't help,
although sometimes it causes part of the image to rotate 90 degrees.
We think this problem only occurs with images that originated from
Illustrator, and wonder if it is connected to any of the Adobe
Download updates that we have installed lately. Any help would be
greatly appreciated.
