I am having a very similar problem using video within PowerPoint XP and
using Windows XP.

I can load the MPEG into the presentation and it plays showing a black
screen. I converted the file to AVI and it plays showing a white screen.

I followed the advice and looked at the tutorial below, but found that it
generally relates to Windows 98, ME and 2000. I found that some of the files
related in the tutorial must be different in XP and am reluctant to fool
with my system.

One item I found of interest is that if I play the presentation clip on a
Win98 machine with Office 2000 it works. Using Office 2000 on the WinXP
machine - it does not work. I am wondering if there is something going on
with the Windows Media player interface in XP..Any help would be more that
gratefully accepted - I have already pulled out most of the hair I have
left.

Thank You
Terry Duncan

I tried both "insert movies and sound" as well as "insert an object". I get
all different kinds of error messages or a black screen while the movie is
playing. Any advise would be highly appreciated
