addendum:
I downloaded SP3 from downloadcenter and installing it (or trying to) I
received the message that it allready had been installed... I suppose this is
a contamination with the previous version....

Peter.
I removed it, and it had been updated. This was also the case with my
desktop (xp home) and there ms update works fine.

Again. Did you remove the previous version of Office. Was the previous version
updated with all the updates including SP3.

may thanks, Taurarian
here is how I proceeded with your advice
regsvr32 jscript>>>>jscript is loaded but the call to DllRegisterServer got
error 0x80004005
regsvr32 vbscript>>>vbscript etc... same error
regsvr32 /i mshtml>>>mshtml is loaded but the entry to DllRegServer was not
found. make sure mshtml is a valid dll or ocx-file and retry
searching for that error I got the internet advice to go to start/all
programs/ accessories/command prompt/(right click)"run as an administartor"
I did all this and now the first pair of commands worked perfectly, but the
error on mshtlm persisted
many thanks for the anwers, but what now? windows update still tells me
everything is all-right.
what about mshtml???
many thanks for your ideas and patience!!

Try the following:-
Open the Vista Start Menu search Bar and type: RUN
Click OK
Type the following lines and after each one click OK:-
regsvr32 jscript
regsvr32 vbscript
regsvr32 /i mshtml
No guarantees
Windows Update on the start menu is okay - from memory it doesn't change to
Microsoft Update.
