What does Microsoft have against Verizon?

My apology in advance if this is the wrong new group.

I run Office 2007 (Home & Student). Recently Microsoft offered an update which required that I enroll on Windows Live. I decided to do so. BTW, my ISP is verizon.net.

As part of the process, you are asked to enter your e-mail address. So I did so. This caused the following message:

The portion of your e-mail address that follows the @ symbol is part
of a "reserved domain" such as live.com, hotmail.com, msn.com or
passport.com. Please type a different e-mail address.

I have several e-mail addresses but all are on verizon.net which means that I cannot enroll.

Could someone explain what a "reserved domain" is and why it's so bad?
