Re: Cann't Install Office 2003 Service Pack (missing registry)

Page 2 ;)
I did a restore and all is now located - however, that did not solve the
problem. BTW - Office 2003 functions just fine, just can't change, update, or
uninstall. All other programs seem to work OK as well. Other software is
installing and uninstalling fine.

It really looks like that you have messed up your Registry with some kind of Registry Cleaning Tool. Can you tell us which one(s) did you use previously

I have been looking for the installshield entries in Common Files - The
entire folder is gone :( I have no idea how that happened. Is there a way to
get any of that information back? Also, I am unable to uninstall Office 2003
- probably because the Installshield Information is not there - huh? What to
do now?

Probably. The addin files may still be there but they won't be loaded.

Eric -
The Cleanup Utility installs, but there are no entries in the window. I
think is was a previous version that worked, but unable to find it. If
uninstall is successful, will I have to reinstall my addins like Systran and
Avery Labels?

It looks like the reason you are having this issue is because there are
referrences in the registry to previous cached patches that no longer exist
on the machine.

Rather then trying to recreate the cached patch, or trying to fix the
registry entry, it would be easier to uninstall and reinstall. Below are
steps to do a thorough uninstall/reinstall.

I'd recommend that you download the windows installer clean-up utiliity
KB290301.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

Install it.
Then run it. (You will find it in the program list)
Find Office 2003 on the list and choose remove.
Reboot.
After the reboot. Find and delete (if present) the following reg keys and
folders.

HKLM\software\microsoft\office
HKLM\software\microsoft\officecustomizewizard
HKCU\software\microsoft\office
HKCU\software\microsoft\officecustomizewizard
c:\msocache (Hidden)
c:\program files\microsoft office
c:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\office11

Reinstall Office.
Then Patch.

Try the below and see if the Office 2003 SP will install. It worked for most that had registry problems from using some kind of registry cleaner at one point. Post back with result

1st Rename Office subkeys

Note: Removing the following registry keys may reset customized user
settings for your Microsoft Office programs.

1. Close all the applications.
2. Click on Start->Run, type in REGEDIT and click on OK.
3. Locate and select the following registry subkeys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0

4. Right click on 11.0 and rename them to Old11.
5. Close the Registry Editor.

2nd. Detect and Repair Office 2003

1. On the Windows taskbar, click Start, point to and click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
3. Click Change/Remove Programs on the left pane.
4. Highlight Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 on the right pane
and click Change.
5. Insert the correct version of CD when it requires.
6. Select “Reinstall and Repair” and click Next.
7. Select “Detect and Repair errors in my Office installation”.
8. Click Install and wait the process to end.

3rd. Install the Updates

I cannot install Service Pack 3 to my Office 2003 Pro. I looked up an article
on Microsoft Support (article ID 884298) titled "You cannot install an office
2003 service pack," and tried to follow the instructions to solve the
problem. However, when I went down to step 2, where I am supposed to find a
registry key (download_code subkey), it is not there on my computer. I think
what happened was, I originally had Office 2003 Basic, and I uninstalled it,
cleaned the Office registry keys, and then installed the Office 2003
Professional. Not sure if that was the reason that download_code subkey is
missing from the registry. Without that, I could not go forward with the
instructions to fix the problem. Could someone help please? Thanks a lot!
