Try closing\Disabling you Antivirus email scanner. It is only another layer and is redundant. You will still be protected.

I have Microsoft Office 2003 Student and Teacher Edition, and I have Windows.
XP Media Center Edition SP2 . It worked well (Outlook, Excel and Word) for
4-5 months on my Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop. Then, none of the applications
worked. I reinstalled Office and same problem persists. For example,
Outlook opens but incoming emails aren't processed - the computer just goes
into idle mode with no error message (dislay indicates 50% complete and
doesn't change, and no emails are received). I tried to dowload the Office
Update Installation Engine and got a similar result - display indicates that
10% has been downloaded and never chages. Again, no error message. I have
no problem accessing the internet. I am able to use my email with no
promblem when I access Roadrunner thru work, so it must be my computer.
Please help.
