microsoft update is not triggered on the time/day set

Hello,
I just installed the microsoft update(for both windows xp pro and office
2003 pro). I have set the Automatic updates under the control panel to: 1.)
"Automatic, everyday at 8AM" for machine A and 2.)" Download upadates but let
me choose when to install" on machine B. I know there are updates out there
because I checked them out (but did not download or update) the day before.
Machine A won't automatically update even if it is already more than an hour
over the set time. Machine B wont download the update even if there are
updates out there. They would both update if I manually did it but that would
defeat the purpose of "automatic updates". Windows used to auto update, now
both wont update at all. Checked the BITS and both RPCs and it has started
and on automatic.Did I miss something?
Thanks for the help in advance.
Jake
