Yes, you can do that. There are a couple of ways to go with this, but
here's the one I recommend:
Uninstall Office 2000.
Re-install Works and Word 2002 to restore your system to how it was
pre-installed. Make sure everything runs fine.
Reinstall Office 2000 and choose a custom install to exclude Word and to
specify a different directory than where Word 2002 is (choose to create one
called c:\program files\office2000, or something).
That should work for you. Keep in mind that if you want to do tasks that
require integration of the Office applications, you may run into problems
because the Word version is later and is disconnected from the rest of the
suite.
