Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Joann, I'll be setting up a new system shortly, and am curious about
the vendors you mentioned.

* Zone Alarm -- I user their free firewall. I recently upgraded to
v6.xx, and now it reminds me periodically to upgrade or buy the pro
version. Plus their free version now comes with Anti-Virus, which I
don't want. Other than that, I've never had a problem. QUESTION --
I'm interested to know of what conflicts/problems it causes with a Win
XP Home & Office XP installation.

* McAfee -- I agree; although I rather like their old Visual Trace
(tracert) program, and haven't noticed conflicts. Have you?

* Norton/Symantec -- OMG! It's like a train wreck waiting to happen.
But I have used Norton Utilities 2002, Partition Magic, Power Quest
Drive Image (now a Symantec product?), Ghost, and Raxco Perfect Disk
(now a Symantec product?). I never use their AV tools. QUESTION --
if I run these products on the new system ONLY FROM THE CD, will that
prevent the conflicts?

* AOL -- It's like a train wreck that's already happened. It's
infested nearly every application CD I have. I have to dig dig dig
into files and folders and the registry to get it out. QUESTION -- do
you know of any tools that can scrub it out of my system after it
installs itself?

Thank you. I'm hoping to build a nice, clean, tight system and keep
it that way! :-)

Lady D

For what it's worth, my list of malware:

Trojans, Viruses, Worms, Spyware, Adware, Keyloggers, anything from
Norton/Symantic, anything from McAfee, anything from Zone Alarm,
anything from AOL.
