This was an offer run by Microsoft for uni students in Australia. We pay
for
a real product key, at a much cheaper price.
http://www.microsoft.com/australia/education/unistudentoffer/default.mspx
Offer's over now, and MS closed down the website.

Anyways, my problem was activating Office on my laptop after activating on
a
desktop, using the same key. According to the terms, i can use the key
legally on a portable AS WELL as the desktop. When i try, it says i
can't.

Call Microsoft. During the activation process it should give you a number to
call.
