You're welcome Chris,
I believe you're fine. Here is an article that discusses what you just did:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/220914/
When it gives directions for customizing the start menu and removing the
shortcut bar from startup, that is what you already did. You just did it a
little differently by directly opening folders. According to the article,
once the shortcut bar is starting automatically, you no longer need that
c:\Windows\Installer shortcut in your startup folder. All that is required
is to remove the other shortcuts and then run the All Programs/Start Menu
program once, answering "yes" when it asks if you want it to start
automatically. So, you might try removing this from your startup folder and
rebooting to see if it still automatically starts. The shortcut in your
startup folder doesn't sound like it's necessary. It shouldn't hurt
anything though either.
I'm glad everything worked!

First, many thanks for that reply, Greg - much appreciated!
I tried moving one shortcut out of each startup folder and then just
swapping them over in All Users/Startup - but it didn't work. However, it
gave me the idea of copying the shortcut from All Programs/Start Menu
because that works for manual launching each time. I've tried this (by
rebooting) and it's just worked fine, but the Properties for it in Mike
Lin's Startup show C:\Windows\Installer\{*huge long number*...}. (In the
All Users/Startup folder, though the icon is different - not a flag now,
just the Office quartered square icon - the Properties seem okay, from
what I remember...) Have I done okay? Or will the world soon end?
Thanks again, Greg,
Chris

Hi Chris,
If you have two shortcut bars from two different versions of Office both
trying to start, this might be causing your problem.
Right-click the start button and select "Open all users". Also right
click again and select "Open". Open the folder "Programs" inside of both
these folders, and then open "Startup". Here you will see shortcuts to
programs that start automatically. You don't need the same program in
both locations - you would be trying to start it twice.
I suggest placing the shortcut for the Office 97 bar that you use in the
....."All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup" folder, and take it out of
the "<username>\Start Menu\Programs\Startup" folder. Move the shortcut
to your desktop first instead of deleting it, so you can replace it if
there is a problem. Reboot or log off and log on and see if this fixes
your problem.
I hope this helps!

The MS Office Shortcut Bar always used to start automatically - but now,
even when 'Would you like the Office Shortcut Bar to start next time you
start Windows?' is selected, the bar does not start. It can easily be
started manually, but not automatically.
Mike Lin's Startup addition
(http://www.mrtech.com/news/messages/2491.html) to Control Panel shows
two Office OSA.EXE files - one in Startup (common) and one in Startup
(user) - but neither launches the Shortcut Bar. (On my system, one
launches the Shortcut Bar from Office 97, one from Office XP - if memory
serves! - and we just use the Office 97 bar.)
Any ideas?
Cheers,
Chris
