Thank you Gyorgy. Having gone through all the steps suggested I ended up
phoning MS who led me through the process to uninstall, re-install and
activate the program. They were very helpful and the program appears to be
running OK now.
Many thanks for your time and assistance.

it won't hurt..
i recommend deleting the regkeys
For Office 2003:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Registration
(of course, export the keys first as a backup)

Thanks again.
I did find this in the knowledge base and deleted Opa11.dat. This made no
difference. However I did note that there was an Opa11.bak file as well.
Should this too have been deleted? I am a bit hesitant when it comes to
deleting Registry files. Thanks for your help so far.

Thank you for responding.
When I start Word it comes on as usual. Only when I open a file and
want
to
use it, or when I wish to start a new document, I get the following
error
message
'this modification is not allowed because the document is locked'.
From this I gather that I am getting restricted functionality. In
fact
the
activate option is not greyed out it just does not work when I click on
it.
I should have indicated that I am in the UK.

do
you get any dialog boxes prompting you to activate?
If not, is Word in restricted functionality mode (e.g. can you edit
new
documents and such)?

I have Office 2003 Student & Teacher which allows for 3 PCs to
operate.
One
is on my daughter's laptop and one was on my desktop. My desktop
crashed
and
I have had a new hard disk drive, motherboard and ram installed.
Whilst
awaiting repair I purchased a laptop and installed Office 2003 on
it.
I
now
wish to reactivate Office 2003 on my desktop but cannot get the
'activate'
command on the Help menu to work as it is greyed out.
How can I re-activate Office 2003 on my desktop now that it has been
activated 3 times. I cannot find out the phone number to activate
by
phone
as to obtain that I need to start the activate process - Catch 22!
Can
some
one provide the phone number so that I can at least contact MS to
start
the
process. I only wish to obtain what I was promised - use on three
PCs.
