Hi Kyman,
Because of the way that Word writes its temporary files
using floppies directly with Word is not recommended,
where possible, first copy the .doc files to your hard drive,
if not possible, then in Tools=>Options=>Save use the
[x] Make local copy... setting before opening a file
from a floppy.
When you see that encoding dialog Word has not recognized
the file as a Word document.
In Tools=>Options=>General turn on the 'Confirm Conversions'
at option before using File=>Open to see what type of file
Word is 'seeing'.
