Thanks to all that contributed.
As mentioned there is a problem with documents produced with Word XP where
the path to the template is embedded into the document
The MS article offered a number of solutions, I have tried the VBA script to
remove the path but on SOME documents it removed the data in some fields. I
would have used the another VBA script to replace the path rather then
remove but we have a 2 TB store with zillions of documents and the script
did not provide a directory traversal, only fixing the documents in the
designated directory.
I have used a network trick: finally sacked the B server and removed all the
entries referring to it from the WINS and DNS and created an alias (Cname)
in the DNS for server A as being server B as well..
All workstations need a DNS cache flush but it is so easy to tell the user
just to reboot :-)
So far so good, no more troubles.
I guess it would have worked just removing ANY reference to server B, as it
would just not resolved the address and would not have waited for timeout.
This mean that documents sent to a user on another network would have not
slow load because THAT network would have no knowledge of server B
existence - that's why no client complained (yet!)
But the templates are currently on server A on the same share place so it
would just point to the right place anyway
