Word & Excel previewer doesn't work

Office 2010
For both Word & Excel (that’s all the Office I use) when I click Open File and the Preview Pane is active, its window has the note: “Select a file to preview”. Once I select any Word or Excel file I get the error message: “The file can’t be previewed because of an error in the Microsoft Word (or Excel) previewer” . Anyone know what the problem might be? Note: If I use the Windows Explorer file manager the preview works fine, no error message. The problem only occurs when opening a file in Word or Excel. Help Please
