FWIW I have Office 2007 and portions of Office 2003 installed on Vista with no problems.

Sorry, you have got the wrong end of the stick. I was not doing any
threatening to anyone but Microsoft.
I have tried your suggestion but am wary of uninstalling 2003 if 2007 still
does not install correctly then I am left with nothing.
