Yes I did uncheck the box for scanning ms documents, still couldn't open any
office products.
Yes I did try what db offered and I still have the scan off in Norton, still
no luck.

Yes, you want to turn off scanning for Microsoft Office Documents (they've.
apparently renamed this option in more recent versions). Note this isn't the
same thing as disabling your virus scanner. The file that is used to scan
Office documents stays resident even if virus scanning is turned off and has
been known to stay resident even if Norton is uninstalled. It will, however,
not be enabled if you start Windows in Safe Mode.
You noted you tried the suggestions "db" offered but did you try turning of
the scanning of Microsoft Office Documents?

In Norton I found "turn off scanning for Microsoft Office Documents" is
this
the one you were referring to?
Wouldn't just turning off Norton achieve the same thing?
Could there still be something in the registry that is screwing something
up? If so, is there a registry cleaner for Microsoft Office? Or a list of
keys left behind after uninstall that need to be removed?
I did some reading on the net and found there were forums removing
add-in's
cleared some issues, is there anything to this?

I have Norton Internet Security.
No I do not have the 2007 compatibility pack.
I really can't think of anything that I have done just prior to it not
working.
In Norton Options disable the "Office Plug-in" option. This is known to
cause conflicts with Office documents. You'll still be protected by the
AutoProtect Layer. The only thing the Office Plut-in does that the
AutoProtect layer doesn't is scan password protected documents prior to
opening.
