You may want to ask this over in the PowerPoint group, microsoft.public.powerpoint. I know 2000 will open version 4.0 files, but I'm not sure if 2002 or 2003 will.
There's a registry hack that lets PPT 2007 open PPT files "prior to PPT 97," but I don't know if that includes version 4.0 or only 95. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922847/en-us

My workstation is running XP/Pro SP2 and Office 2007.
I have been going through some older cds of Office documents and have
found quite a few *.ppt files that I can't read. When I try,
Powerpoint 2007 tells me it is either not a real powerpoint file or is
corrupt. On a hunch, I had a friend who has powerpoint 2000 give it a
try. He was able to successfully open the files. He said powerpoint
2000 apparently wanted to convert from powerpoint 4.
Does anyone know or a program that will convert powerpoint 4 to
powerpoint 2007. If not, how about converting from powerpoint 4 to
something powerpoint 2007 can read?
I do not have office 2000 & there are too many old ppt 4 files to have
my friend do the conversion.
