Thanks Bob. This information is helpful in explaining everything. I will
try the copy local/save remote option for Word, but that option is not
available in Excel. If this works for Word, is there an option to do this in
Excel?
Thanks,
Eric

Hi Eric,.
Word creates a new file on save by renaming the temp file and deleting the original. It's the way it's designed.

The autorecovery feature in Word can be something you're running into as well
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/107686/en-us?FR=1#appliesto
The specified permissions are included in
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/277867/en-us?FR=1
If your folders are on a network or mapped drive you may be able to use the setting in Word 2007 Advanced options (Alt, F, I, A) in
the Save subsection for
[x] Copy remotely stored files onto your computer, and update the remote file when saving"
You could also use a script or macro to make a copy of the work folder or to do duplicate saves to two locations.
With trying to outthink Word <g> you run the risk of losing new work while accomplishing the ability to save old or temp files.

I have some folders with security setup for reading and writing, but not
deleting. This is at the request of some managers to allow editing, but not
deleting of files within the folder. Office 2007 has a problem with this
process due to the .tmp files being created when the file is opened from the
folder. The file save process will not compelete because the .tmp file can't
be deleted, access denied or other errors, all related to no delete access
permissions. Office 2003 does not display this problem with the same folder
permissions, as it left the tmp file in the folder and allowed the save to
complete. This wasn't as clean, but did allow the process to complete. Does
anyone know of a way to make this work as is, not using the work around of
copying local, editing, and then copying back to the original file location?
Could the .tmp files be created on the local workstation TMP folder and
copied back to the server automatically and transparent to the user. The
Office 2007 issue limits security permissions to read only, modify, or no
access and removes the option for more granular security permissions. Any
