Hi Russell,
For the MSXML Parser, versions older than 6.0 have been noted, for .NET framework it can sometimes be a combination of versions
being installed, but the first thing to check is if CLView.exe and the Office apps in their current build/update version are
specifically allowed to pass through the firewall.
There are policy settings that companies use as well that can block the online use of various Office features including Office
Button=>New and trying to use the online templates.
IE7 being able to use the internet is a different set of security parameters than allowing Office access.

So, define 'older' for me. Right now, i have a brand new Vista Business
laptop with SP1 installed. After installing Office 2k7 (also patched with
Office SP1) the laptop still has the same error that it cannot connect to
office online. I have not yet tried to do this outside of our corporate
firewall to verify that it is the source of the problem. But something is
blocking access to office online help from all of our internal computers
while still allowing us to access the website via IE (IE7).
If it is an xml parser problem, is there a technet KB article that describes
the problem and how to fix it? Which version of the xml parser should be
used?
Is there any way to troubleshoot this? I can't find an event in the log
that relates to this. I can't find an explicit deny in the firewall that
relates to this. It would help to know how Office help communicates with the
online service so that i can see if it is a port or protocol block.
while this isn't a work stopper, it is annoying. When users come to me with
the problem all i can do is shrug and say that i can't find a solution. i
could open a trouble ticket, but i would rather not 'spend' one of our
trouble tickets on this so that i can save them for a mission critical
problem.
