This is a general suggestion for all newsgroups. It would be nice
to be able
to search by date and/or my display name in order to find any
threads I may
have read from a specific date (or range) or any threads I may be
participating in.
You will get a far better "experience" by dumping the horrible web
interface and using a proper news reader instead. You already have
one on your machine - Outlook Express prior to Windows Vista and
Windows Mail and News in Vista.
See this on how to set up Outlook express as your news reader: (I
expect Windows mail and News is horribly similar....)

Hi Gordon,
Although I agree that a newsreader is far preferable to anything web-based
for reading and posting, searching is limited to the headers and bodies that
you have stored in your reader's local database. That's often just a small
fraction of what's available.
The best place for searching for threads by topic, date, and/or poster's
name is Google Groups, http://groups.google.com/advanced_search.
