Re: Word won't save

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

The products that I have tried are Adobe Acrobat 8.1 Standard and Adobe
Acrobat 7 Standard. The problem occurs when either version of this
application is installed, but only for this one specific user. There must be
something more that affects the user's profile... But what?

But, I've never seen problems with saving changes to documents.

Am I correct that you're talking about either Acrobat Standard or
Professional, and not the reader?

If all else fails, you can try an alternative to Acrobat. I sometimes use
FoxIt reader instead of Adobe Reader, since it has less overhead. I have not
tried their PDF creation/editing tools, however so I don't know how well
they work. They do have free trial versions, however:

http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

There's something called FreePDF that I've heard good things about, but
haven't used.

I use Office 2007, which has the ability to create PDF files using a free
add-in from Microsoft, so my old copy of Adobe Professional 7 is now
languishing on the shelf. However, when I ran into problems with the Adobe
add-in causing Word 2007 and Word 2003 to slow down a lot, I removed the
add-in portion, leaving the PDF printer driver in place. I was still able to
create PDFs by printing to the PDF driver. For me, this didn't represent a
loss of functionality since I never used their toolbar add-in (which didn't
work in Word 2007 in any case), and had always used the printer approach
instead.

Unfortunately none of those suggestions solved the problem. On the other
hand I think that I've found what is causing it now. Adobe Acrobat 8.1 has
been installed on this computer and after uninstalling it, saving
documents
works fine for all users... Is there a known issue with this version of
Acrobat and Word?

"Herb Tyson [MVP]" wrote:

That suggests two possible causes and remedies:

1. Corrupted normal.dot. Rename it or delete it, and see if the problem
is
fixed. Location can be found in Tools - Options - File Locations - User
templates.

2. Corrupted registry entry, usually the Data key. If the preceding
doesn't
fix the problem, rename or delete the Data key, which can be found here:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word

Note: edit the registry with caution.

If neither of those fix the problem, the usual 3rd source is a misfiring
add-in. Remove add-ins one at a time to see if the problem magically goes
away with one of them.

Yes. When starting in Safe Mode Word works correctly...

To clarify... have you tried starting Word in Safe Mode, and does Word
work

The user's home folder is on a network drive, but it doesn't matter
in
this
case because he never gets the chance to choose a location at all.
The
Save
As-window never pops up.

The problem only occurs in MS Word (Office 2003 Sp3). No other
programs
are
affected, not even the other Office applications...

Can they save from any other applications?

I'm having a similar problem with one of a our computers, but
unfortunately
none of the solutions here seems to solve it. There are no
problems
opening
documents but saving them just isn't not possible. Nothing
happens
when
trying.

One thing that might differ here is that the problem only occurs
for
one
user (domain user). If I log on as another user there are no
troubles
saving
any documents. Therefore it is most likely that the problem
originates
from
the user profile. I'd rather not give this user a new profile
(lots
of
personal settings), so what can I do... Any ideas?

There are a couple of things that can cause this, including
conflicting
add-ins and some Word settings.

In Tools=>Options=>Save turn off the 'Autorecover' option then
close
Word. From Start=>Run search for all files using

~$*.*;*.tmp

and recycle them then restart Word to see if the error still
occurs.
If so, try holding the contrl key when starting Word and see if
you
can
open/create then save a file.

Oh yes. This is Word 2002 sp3. And Excel will save a workbook.
I just got a pop-up: "Saving the Autorecovery file is postponed
for
document
1". <<
