Thanks for the reply,
Having gone through every device on my device manager i can find no mention
of Systems Management Server (SMS) drivers for anything, my nvidia driver is
up to date and i have never used multiple monitors so i dont see why i would
have a mirror driver anyway.
The two things different on my PC since my old install of windows is i am
now dual booting windows XP pro and i unlocked the full administraor account
to use as a primary account due to the frustration of UAC as a power user.
I doubt either of those things would've caused the problem, but check your display settings to verify
that you're set for more than 256 colors and check Accessibility settings to ensure that you don't
have High Contrast mode enabled.

correct video card driver.Which is evidently not right. i had the exact same package nstalled before
with no problems but after formatting and reinstalling Vista Business this
has happened, i've installed all the updates and run all the diagnostic tests
built in but to no avail.
It doesn't affect the way i use office and is the only problem i can find.
My computer can run anything that's thrown at it and has a vista experience
base score of 6.5 so i cant see whats affected it.
Rick Bridges found an answer to this problem on his system and posted it here a while back.
If this solves it for you, please let us know. Thanks.

Rick Bridges: "Hopefully, this will save someone a few hours of frustration....
Problem: It was caused by Windows defaulting to the SMS Mirror Driver
instead of the ATI driver for the video card. The SMS Mirror Driver is
installed with the SMS Agent, it handles video acceleration for the SMS
Remote Control Agent.
Resolution: This can be fixed by opening Device Manager and removing or
disabling the SMS Mirror driver. Restarting the system then allows Windows to load using the
supposed to look."
The SMS Remote Control Agent still worked properly, and the Office 2007 now looks like it's
