Re: Installing Visual Studio damaged Office 2003

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

It didn't really indicate the reason. The message just indicated that it
failed to start and asked whether I wanted it to start again in "safe mode",
to which I replied "yes". When starting in safe mode, it gave me another
message saying that it failed to start in safe mode and asked whether I
wanted it to attempt a "detect and repair", to which I responded "yes" again.
It then asked me for the install CD and went through an exhaustive
installation/configuration process, which completed successfully. When
starting up again, I got the same series of messages.

Since I first posted the message, here's a follow up. I was low on disc
space so I did a disc cleanup, including deleting temporary files (which btw
also removed all my previous Restore Points -- which I will post another
message about, because this prevented me from backup up to the point prior to
installing VS). Anyway, I uninstalled VS, but left .Net Framework 2.0
installed. That didn't help either. I then ran an up-to-the-minute Microsoft
Office 2003 Update. Still no help. All Office components (Word, Excel, etc.)
worked fine throughout this ordeal. Only Outlook had a problem. I finally
decided to uninstall the Business Contact Manager add-in, since it was
reported as failing to start when the problem first started. That cleared the
problem. Outlook now works fine.

Conclusion: I don't know why, if any, there would be any kind of interaction
between VS and BCM, or whether it was just a computer glitch during the
installation process. Even though I was low on disc space, I never went below
2GB, so I don't think that was the issue.

I will not bother to install BCM again since I'm in the process of migating
to Vista and Office 2007 anyway.

Thank you, Echo S for responding so promptly.

Hi,

I 'm running Office Professional Edition 2003 on WinXP Pro SP2. I
installed
Visual Studio 2005 (which installed .Net Framework 2.0 as well), then when
I
tried starting Outlook, it failed due to a problem with the Business
Contact
Manager. It then tried to to start in safe mode but couldn't either. It
asked
me if I wanted to "Detect and Repair", and I let it. The repair completed
successfully, but gave me the same problem again. I tried installing
Office
SP1, but that didn't help either. I've installed VS 2005 on systems
running
Offve 2003 before without any problems, but can't figure this one out. I
did
a search on the Office newsgroup but didn't find any reports of a similar
problem. Any idea what may be going on?

Thanks

.
