That would be their handling charge, clearing Customs, plus delivery in the
UK.
Dealing with software from the US at the moment is attractive - $2 = £1
If you import for personal use, you need to keep an eye on the duty codes -
they can change :-(
Take care

It was a while ago so I cannot recollect precise details of delivery, I
know when I last had hardware shipped there was a sum to pay at the
sorting office.

Sliding OT slightly -
Interesting - so who handles your clearance at the point of entry - mine
is done by Parcel Force/Post Office as I would assume for you as they
handle ALL post from abroad - but always a £5 - £8 charge as they collect
no duty from me - otherwise they would not charge.

On the last occassion I had software shipped from US I only had to pay
postal charges, whether that was down to an error in customs I dont
know.

You can purchase in the US, just select an online retailer that has
options for overseas post delivery.

Clipped.......

I've purchased from US without problems, from recollection there is no
duty on software.

True, there is no import duty on computer software.
And the item purchased should be free of any US local taxes.
However there are other charges - V.A.T @ 17.5% - variable charges for
shipping via US Postal(if appropriate) - clearance charges in the UK.
Allow for a minimum addition cost of 35% on the net cost of the item.
As long as the items are not too heavy, you can make a saving :-)
If you are in business you can claim back the VAT and may be able to
defer import duty if applicable.
Plus there are the forms to fill in for customs etc.
