I have never posted before so not sure of the all the ins and outs.
Access has been suggested by a friend and we tried it. It will not let me
put the information in the format that I want. I have fought with excell
and
it will not work like I want either and I have asked for help and they
cant
figure it out. I am thinking word is my answer but I can not figure out
how
or what applications to use.... that is IF I am correct.
I am a collector. There are several thousand items and I need what ever
format to expand with the collection. I have many different collections
within the main collection about 30-50 then depending on the group they
break
down into several sub groups and some even further.
Word lets me format cellspacing to fit the information which is not
uniform,
but when I enter new data on page 5 it changes everthing thru the last
page.
someone suggest web page set up with links and easy click and go... I can
not
find the training for hyper links for word 2007 I have gone thru all the
training material I can find for word 2007 and have even branched out for
the
basics in frontpage. I am still looking ... I dont know if word will work
because of editing problem mentioned above. I just installed office 2007 -
about 2 days ago. I am trying to catch up. There will be pictures, text
and
numbering issues. I want comprehensive search features. with in the whole
collection as well as in the groups and sub groups. I am trying to go thru
any of the training clips that might apply and have asked everyone and
anyone. I have asked fellow collectors and looked at special collecting
software. There are to many veriables in the collection that I have not
had
any luck.
I have been working on this for a very long time-- with an overwhelming
amount of information ahead of me to have to redo--again-- because I didnt
know enough and picked the wrong format.
So here I am asking again.... I dont know what part of my inquiry prompted
you to point me to "How to ask a question" So I dont know how to correct
it.

Your "groups" and "sub-groups" scenerio is precisely the reason that
relational databases, such as MS Access, were created. Your "pictures" and
"links" web-page scenario is known as a "user interface".
You would use an MS Access database as the "back end", and a web development
tool, such as MS FrontPage, to develop a web-page "front end".
The learning curve for general database concepts is moderate. If you are of
average intellegence, 20 or so hours of serious study should provide you
with a grasp of the necessary rudements.
The learning curve for MS Access is steep. A typical introductory course
entails 40 hours class time and another 40 to 60 hours of "hands-on"
practice. After completing an introductory course, you *may* have the skill
to design and develop your data base. If not, take an Intermediate course.
The learning curve for MS FrontPage is moderate. 20 or 30 hours of study
should provide you with the skill to craft a front-end.
You will not, in other words, find a five-minute solution to your database
development needs in a newsgroup.
If you lack the time or the willingness to acquire the skill necessary to
design and build your own database, check with your local community college
and see if a student is willing to create your database as a class project
or something.

I Have a large collection to inventory. There are many categories and
subcategories.
I would like to have a main index that takes me to the individual
categories
index. Then click on subcategories and from there a picture or word
that
takes me to the individual item information.
I have tried several applications but have not found one that looks or
has
the features I want. Someone suggest a web page set up might be what I
need.
I don't know. I am not very computer savvy but I am learning as I go.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
